Asides: Blog Readability?

Blog Readability

I was reading the blogs of some other missionaries, specifically an interesting series of posts on “God’s call to the fools,” when I came across a little tool that measures the level of education that it takes to read and understand a certain website. Some that I tried required an elementary level education, others a high school education and so on. Imagine my surprise however, when I found what it took to read and understand disciplemexico.org. That’s right, the blog readability test said that it takes a genius to understand the things that I say.

This leads me to two conclusions:

  1. I have a very intelligent reader base. Congratulations then to those who have subscribed and regularly struggled to understand what this rambling missionary writes.
  2. Perhaps I need to be a bit more accessible in the future. What do you think? Do you read disciplemexico.org with a dictionary.com window open? Let me know.

Oh, and if you want to check out how your blog rates, head over to the blog readability test and find out for yourself.

    Wow! Genius, huh? Congratulations!

Not only is your writing genius, your blog looks classy too!

I checked my personal blog and found it to be elementary. I’m very happy with that, especially since I’ve covered heavier topics at times, and my wife does bug me about using obscure words at times. 😉

I’d be curious to know how your blog was measured though. I think there are one or two similar tools online, and a lot of programs can check your posts before you put them up to show what the reading level is. If I were you, I’d get a “second opinion”.

But I agree – the more accessible the better, especially since people read so much less these days (so I hear), and you know what they say about the schools… 🙂

Thanks, Jim, for the kudos. I did what you suggested and tried another readability test. It seems that genius level for the Blog Readability Test works out to about the first quarter of the sixth grade on the Flesch-Kinkaid Grade scale. I never thought that middle school was genius level. Then again, perhaps the Beverly Hillbillies wrote the Blog Readability Test?

    Alan,

You’re welcome! I ran across a mention of your post on Guy Muse’s blog. It was a great read that certainly deserves much more than just an aside. I too look forward to reading more of your stuff.

Hahaha…I put in Alex and Maggie’s blog and it also came up as genius. Either my kids are way smarter than I thought or your suggested site may need a little tweaking!!
