Road Trip!

We headed over to the Cape Girardeau section of Southern Missouri this weekend for two services, AM in Fisk and PM in Dexter. We had a great time ministering in both services and we were encouraged to see a good response to our message, including several around the altars on Sunday night.

A special thank you is in order for Ronnie and Francine Monehan who took us into their home for some much needed rest on Sunday afternoon. Thanks as well to Mikey, Lizzie, Joshua, and Jason Kohlbaker for readjusting their sleeping arrangements for the missionaries on Sunday night.

Here are some shots of the kids with Pastor Mike on Monday morning. Who says these MKs don’t have any fun?

I can’t think of a better way to satisfy your appetite than to talk to you about the food on the Yucatan!

In Merida, you can find food to suit about anyone’s appetite, but there are several traditional dishes that charaterize the Maya cuisine. One of the main stapes is corn, but pork, poultry, and fresh fruit also make up a large part of the Yucatecan diet. I’ve included a link to one of the better sites that I have found on the subject. Just click here to find out more.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” -Heb 12:1

The image above is a map of Mexico that Kelly created to depict what it will take in monthly commitments in order for us to make it to the field. Currently, we require 46 monthly commitments at $50 a piece in order to leave.

We completed the bottom part of the map today, listing those who had committed to us throughout our year-long itineration process. As we did this, we were reminded of the “Great Cloud of Witnesses” who are surrounding us with prayer and the financial support that it will take for us to be successful as missionaries to Mexico.

Last night at our service at First A/G in Carthage MO, Pastor Dan asked the congregation to come forward to pray for us at the close of the service. During the prayer time, it was impressed upon me that we are not going to the field on our own. We will be going equipped with the power of your prayers, and I am sure that as you agree in prayer with the Holy Spirit on our behalf, we cannot fail!

Thank you to all of you who make up our “Great Cloud of Witnesses”, and to those of you who will join with them in our support.

Gracias

Thank you for joining the team!

We’ve had a busy weekend! We had planned to be in the Kansas City area for two services, one in the city and one in Blue Springs, just to the east, but our service inside KC had been cancelled. Fortunately, after a few phone calls, we were able to schedule a 10-minute window (that’s missionary speak for a short presentation within a service) with Pastor Ted and Fran Furry in Nevada, Missouri in the morning and then drive the rest of the way to Blue Springs for our service with Pastor John and Mary Ann Martz. Here is a picture of the kids in front of the church in Blue Springs.

We were thankful for the opportunity to share about Mexico in both services, but we were espcially grateful for the opportunity to pray for a team of students at Blue Springs that will be leaving for Reynosa, Mexico for an Ambassador in Mission (AIM) trip in June.

We believe in short-term missions trips. Our call to missions was cemented during an AIM trip to Dominican Republic, and a first hand experience of cross-cultural ministry will enable many in our fellowship to break away from everyday life and see, not only the needs of the countries they visit, but how God is moving all over our world. It births compassion, motivates prayer, and empowers service during the trip and after. So if you have the opportunity, as a youth or as an adult, to take part in a short-term missions trip, I encourage you to jump at the chance. Rick Warren says that this is one step to becoming a “World-Class Christian,” and I agree.

Sometimes the goals that we must acheive as missionaries seem overwhelming. These milestones, coupled with the daily bustle of itinerating make it easy to lose focus. It is those times that I choose to run away.

Those of you who knew us before we were missionaries know that I enjoy to run. I’ve trained for and run in 3 marathons and a good number of 5 and 10Ks. Running has helped me lose weight and keep off the itineration pounds. It has also served as a refuge. It is a time that I can think, a time that I can refocus, and a time that I can pray.

When the activities of life knock me off balance, it is a time that I can reacheive that Christ-Centeredness that I must have in order to survive. And it’s funny, when I run to Jesus and I spend some time contemplating His majesty, all of the pressures of itineration really seem to be shrunk down to size.

Facing problems? maybe it’s time that you run away. Run for the physical benefits, but be sure to run to Jesus. He has a way of changing our perspective.

How do you get recharged after a long road trip? Well, Joseph illustrates how he gets his energy after several hours in the car: Go to the Power Potty!

When Joseph was three, he incorrectly heard us call Porta-Potties, “Power Potties,” and the name stuck! Joseph is standing in front of the “power potty” at the Conway, MO exit on the way to Mother’s Day services at Park Hills First A/G and at the “Hub of the Universe” in Vulcan, MO.

A special thanks as well to Farmington First A/G for the use of their evangelist quarters on Sunday Night.

We have new members on our support team!

Greetings from the road! We are on the road in De Soto, Missouri, where we celebrated a wonderful Wednesday night service.

Today is the National Day of Prayer, and I hope that many people will be spending time praying for our country and the leaders that govern us. Also, today is Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican celebration that commemorates the temporary turning back of the French occupation at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, a celebration that signifies the Mexicans? determination to defend themselves. More recently, it has become celebration of Mexican culture, and a time each year that an increasing number of Americans can sample the Mexican fiesta.

It is our hope that in the midst of the celebration, each one of you will take the time to pray for our neighbors to the south. As you pray, ask that the Holy Spirit would be able to break down the Mexican resistance to the gospel, to allow them to open their eyes to the opportunity to have a relationship with God and the blessings that come when they make Jesus their Lord.
